Jill Bush Fellow & Examiner ISTD, FIDTA

My love of dance started at the age of eight years when I attended my first Ballroom/Latin American class.  Initially I took ISTD amateur examinations before turning professional in 1974. By the age of 25 I had gained Fellowship qualifications in Modern Ballroom, Latin-American and Sequence and was one of the first candidates to take the newly introduced Disco/Freestyle Fellowship in 1995.  However, my main ambition at the time was achieved in 1992 when I was appointed an ISTD examiner in all four styles.  Regularly, on behalf of the ISTD, I have worked both here, in the UK and overseas examining, lecturing, adjudicating and promoting dance.

I have now taught for 38 years, the last 28 of which running Shoebury Dance Centre.  During this time, I have had the opportunity to teach all four styles of dance to a wide range of pupils – both amateur and professional.  I have regularly been involved with “outside” tuition in schools, colleges and universities.  I also specialise in training professionals to qualify and up-grade their existing qualifications.

Another dimension of my work is serving on the ISTD Sequence Faculty Committee.  Joining in 1987, I soon became South East Area Organiser and then Secretary.  However, in 2005 I was elected as Chairman – a challenging role, yet a most enjoyable one!

In 2013 I was the recipient of the Imperial Award for services to the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.

Of course, having such a varied career is wonderful for me but it would not be possible without the help of my teachers/colleagues here, at the Studio – they are all “worth their weight in gold”!

I joined Ballet classes at the tender age of two and took graded  examinations starting from Primary through to Senior grade with the Royal Academy of Dancing.

It wasn't until I reached the age of ten, I discovered Ballroom, Latin American and Disco Freestyle and found that this was my real passion. I attended a range of classes each week at Shoebury Dance Centre and worked my way up the Amateur medal test ladder.

By the age of eighteen I had started my training (still with Jill Bush) as a teacher, going on to qualify in Modern Ballroom, Latin American, Disco Freestyle and Classical Sequence.   At present I hold Licenciate levels and frequently adjudicate at ISTD Medallist Festivals.

I have also lectured and assisted in lectures at various ISTD Congresses and have taught children of all ages in state and private schools. I’ve also worked with ‘Special Needs’ for a number of years.

I continue to enjoy teaching at the Studio, which includes pupils of all ages/standards in either private tuition sessions or group classes.
